Police: Woman accused of biting off Massachusetts officer’s ear

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A rookie police officer was left with a gruesome disfigurement and a 19-year-old Massachusetts woman was ordered held without bail following an alleged attack this past weekend in Salem.

Emma Wiley pleaded not guilty Monday in Salem District Court to charges of mayhem, assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, among other related offenses.

Prosecutors say Patrolwoman Jessica Rondinelli was attempting to put Wiley in a police cruiser shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday when the Marblehead woman bit a large chunk out of her ear.

Police later found the section of Rondinelli’s ear on the floor of her cruiser, but doctors at Salem Hospital were unable to re-attach it.

Rondinelli worked her first shift on the force on July 1.
