NYC Police Commissioner William Bratton stepping down

NEW YORK (AP) – New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton is resigning his post atop the nation’s largest police force.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says Bratton will retire next month, and that James O’Neill, the department’s top chief, will succeed him.

Bratton had said last month that he would not remain head of the NYPD past the end of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s first term in 2017.

Bratton is in his second stint as commissioner in New York. He led the department for more than two years in the mid-1990s and began serving as de Blasio’s police commissioner in January 2014.

He recently heaped praise on O’Neill.
