New York State Victim Services Office turns 50

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – For decades, the New York State Office of Victim Services has been helping the innocent affected by a crime.

On the organization’s 50th anniversary, survivors had the opportunity to say thank you by sharing how the office has positively impacted their lives.

Lisa Gilbert and her family live in Rotterdam, nine years ago her daughter Riley was abused by the family babysitter, leaving the 2-year-old with a traumatic brain injury.

The organization recently helped the Gilberts make improvements to their home. Lisa says those improvements have dramatically improved Riley’s quality of life.

“She can be in the family room with us, she can eat dinner with us, she can get to her bathroom and bedroom. We were carrying her all over our house, so it was hard on us. It was becoming hard on her to be a part of our family.”

The organization offers a number of financial and emotional support services. Just last year, it provided nearly $20 million in assistance to crime victims and their families.
