COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – One person is dead, and more are hurt after a stolen car sped off the road and overturned at Central Ave and Route 155 in Colonie early Sunday morning.
Witnesses told News10 it was like a scene out of an action movie.
“We saw the whole thing,” says Ann Amrie-Kelly. “We couldn’t even believe what we saw. It was unbelievable.”
The accident happened around 2:51 a.m. Sunday morning.
Colonie Police describe the incident as a one-car fatal motor vehicle accident.
Police say a blue 2004 Ford Freestar, a minivan, was traveling westbound on Central Ave, when it went off the road, ran through a utility pole and then flipped over.
That same 2004 Ford Freestar belongs to Pastor Dwight Moore of Schenectady, who’s cars were stolen last week.
There were three people inside when the van crashed.
Police say the driver died at the scene and two additional occupants were transported by Colonie EMS to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries.
Before the crash, a Schenectady County Sheriff’s unit had attempted to stop the van, which had been reported as stolen in the City of Schenectady.
News10 had a crew at the scene Sunday morning that reported witnesses someone being placed under arrest.
A witness to the accident told News10 that the minivan flipped multiple time before coming to a rest on its roof.
“I saw the car flip,” said Amrie-Kelly. “It looked like it flipped a couple of times. It was a very small car, I remember. All of a sudden we heard a big crash. It flipped a couple of times, and I saw somebody fly out of the car.”
As a result of the crash, and ongoing investigation, Central Ave was closed in both directions between Route 155 and Colonie Plaza.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by Colonie Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
