Police recover stolen car following assault of elderly woman outside Colonie Center

Police say this is an image of the actual car stolen.

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Colonie Police Department is investigating a robbery and assault that took place Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of Colonie Center.

The 77-year-old driver remains a patient at Albany Medical Center, where she is being treated for injuries sustained during an apparent carjacking.

Police say the victim was in her car, parked near the Christmas Tree Shop around 1:50 p.m., when an unknown suspect opened the driver’s side door, and began punching the woman in the face and head.

According to police, the suspect then forced his way into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and drove to the parking lot of Inga’s Diner on Fuller Road, while the victim remained in the car.

The suspect then physically removed the victim from the car, before driving away.

“The guy pulled into the lot stopped long enough to drag her out by her feet and then took off,” Colonie Police Lt. Robert Donnelly said.

The victim is being treated for numerous lacerations on her head and face.

A passerby called 911 after seeing the badly beaten elderly woman stumbling out of the diner’s parking lot.

Since then, the vehicle has been located. An Albany police officer spotted the vehicle Monday morning on Delaware Street near Elizabeth Street.

Colonie Police Detectives, with the assistance of Albany Police, responded to that location to canvass the area for witnesses and possible video surveillance in search of a possible suspect.

The vehicle will be towed to the Colonie Police Station to be examined forensically.

“We have no idea what motive he was using to do this,” Lt. Donnelly said. “To beat up an elderly person in order to take her car is a sign of a dangerous person.”

Officials say no weapons were used, threatened, or displayed in the incident, and no additional property, aside from the victim’s car was stolen.

The Colonie Police Department is thanking the public for their assistance in locating the victim’s vehicle.

The victim remains at Albany Medical Center.

Police say the carjacker is described as being a medium to dark skinned man with curly hair.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Colonie Police Department at (518)-783-2744.
