Child’s legacy lives on in gift to Albany Med Children’s Hospital

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center received a $75,000 check on Wednesday.

The check was given by the “Brave Will Foundation”, which was established in honor of Willem Bernard Hladun, a Ballston Lake boy who died of a rare form of cancer in 2009, just days before he was to turn 7-months-old. The gift is intended to support the “Journeys” Pediatric Palliative Care Program, which provides support and services to families who are caring for a child with a debilitating, life-threatening, or terminal medical condition.

“The Journeys program supports pediatric palliative care,” said Tammy Hladum, Willem’s mother. “So the money used will help the families through the doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplain. It will help support the families in any way that the doctors feel is necessary.”

Will’s parent’s Matt and Tammy serve as the foundation’s President and Vice President.
