AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – According to NY Alert, more than 500,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the Mohawk River on Wednesday.
The discharge occurred at around 3:15 a.m. and lasted nearly four hours.
Officials say an equipment failure at the Amsterdam Wastewater Treatment Plant caused the spill.
Colonie officials say the town’s drinking water was not affected by the sewage spill.
Equipment is planned to be replaced to eliminate future spills.
