MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – For thousands of local children, summer vacation means fun in the sun and traveling with the family.

For hundreds of other kids, it means going hungry without a meal from school during the day.

The United Way along with county leaders kicked off their Summer Meals Program.

The signs of summer are apparent at Sunnyside Day Care in Troy.

“Daddy said we gonna be here every week,” Zaria Forenin said.

Among this group of children are some who may otherwise go hungry if it wasn’t for the Summer Meals Program.

“Lunches are really good, give us sandwiches yogurt stuff life that,” 12-year-old Dejohna Hill said.

Hill comes here every summer where for the next 10 weeks the fridges will be packed with free meals so parents won’t have to worry about their children going hungry.

It’s extremely important, especially at the end of the month, when they run out of food stamps.

The need for the program is becoming more crucial every year. Last year, they saw their highest demand ever giving out 86,504 packed meals .

Everyone gets a lunch so none of the kids feel like the reason they’re having this lunch is because of where they come from.

On Thursday, they got something extra – free backpacks filled with goodies.

It’s a reminder that school will start up before they know it. That’s why Dejohna is taking advantage of everything the program has to offer.

“Because you get to play games and be with your friends and have fun.”

The Summer Food Program has 29 sites throughout the county. Albany County also kicked off their program.

You don’t have to sign up, just show up at the sites.
