(WFLA) — Phone numbers posted online try tricking Facebook customers into calling them when trying to reach customer service. Facebook does not have a customer service phone number.
Jennifer Doney tried calling two numbers while trying to get help unlocking her daughter’s Facebook account.
“I Googled it,” she said. “I was looking for a number, and the official logo comes up and it gave me the number. I was like, ‘I’ll call this number.’ And turns out it wasn’t Facebook.”
She tells 8 On Your Side there were tell-tale signs she wasn’t talking to a Facebook representative.
“Technical support informed me that for 20 dollars, they could unlock her account,” she explained. “I was like, ‘why does it cost me money to unlock an account that doesn’t cost money in the first place?’ I thought, well, that seems a little off.”
She refused to pa, and got nowhere when she demanded to speak with a manager. She doesn’t know what would have happened had she given them her credit card information.
“I get the feeling they would have wiped out my account or something,” she said.
8 On Your Side’s Lindsey Mastis tried calling the same numbers. No one answered, and the automated recordings did not mention Facebook at all.
Doney eventually reached out to Facebook through the proper channels, but to make things simpler, she had her daughter create a whole new account.
