ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Fireworks are a traditional way to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend. Some attend professional displays, and others set their own off at home.
If you do plan to enjoy fireworks at home this Fourth of July holiday, there are a few things you need to know to help keep your family safe.
Hand-held sparklers are some of the most popular fireworks, especially with children.
It’s important to remember however, that sparklers get extremely hot and can remain hot even once they are done sparking.
Deputy Chief EJ Seney of the Albany Fire Department says sparklers can cause second or third degree burns if not used properly.
He recommends having a bucket of water nearby for children to put used sparklers in once they are done.
As for fireworks, Seney says it’s safest to leave them to the professionals.
If you do decide to shoot them off yourself, it is important to know where you are shooting them towards, and where they are going to land.
In other words, what goes up must come down.
Seney says errant fireworks can easily cause fires and severe injuries.
“We celebrate our freedoms, and one of our freedoms is that we have the freedom to choose,” says Seney. “And hopefully everybody choose to celebrate safely and wisely.”
Already this year, fireworks cause a fire that destroyed 3 homes in Amsterdam.
Seney says the relative lack of rain this year means even wildfires are a possibility if people aren’t careful with fireworks.
