WYANDANCH, N.Y. (AP) – Police say a Long Island man sustained serious injury to his fingers when a firework went off in his hand.
Suffolk County police say it happened while several people were setting off fireworks in front of an auto repair shop in Wyandanch on Thursday night.
They say the 35-year-old Brentwood man lost two fingers when he lit a mortar firework that detonated in his hand. The explosion also severed a third finger and injured a fourth. He was taken to a hospital.
No charges were immediately filed.
Police say possession and use of fireworks by individuals is illegal.
