TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — On Wednesday around midnight a fire broke out in Troy. Now the fire is out and restoration crews have moved in.
It’s a white multi-family home and while it may not look like there is much damage, crews tell NEWS10 the bulk of the fire was in the back.
The flames broke out at 92 6th Avenue in Troy just before midnight.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire. They say it sent a woman to the hospital and left at least 8 people without a home.
A man who lived on the first floor didn’t want to go on camera, but he tells NEWS10 he was down the street at a friend’s house when an orange glow caught his eye.
“I ran across the street and that’s when I saw the flames so I’m like call 911! The house is on fire! The house is on fire!
That’s when he says he ran inside to wake everyone up.
“We all tried to get everyone out of the house, but the lady upstairs from me, that’s where all the smoke was. She was choking; she and the two kids were choking. Every time we tried to open the door… pitch black.”
That woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and a cat is still unaccounted for.
In the midst of all the chaos though, he says he never felt alone.
“As soon as I yelled fire, call 911. The whole block came out and started helpin’. I had no shoes on, I borrowed shoes from somebody. I don’t even know whose shoes,” he said. “That’s what I can say about this block. It’s like a family.”
The charred porch and melted siding isn’t hard to miss.
Firefighters say the damage is extensive, but it should be salvageable. Crews were here bright and early picking up debris, and getting started on the restoration process.
While he tells us he’s just happy to be alive, he says this fire took more than just his home.
“All the stuff that’s in the house, there’s pictures you can’t get back. We’ll be ok it’s just a lot of memories we can’t get back.”
NEWS10 will keep you updated on the investigation.
