GREENPORT, N.Y. (NEWS10) – According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s office the driver of a motorcycle was killed Saturday afternoon after a collision with a van.
Police officials say Sheriff’s Patrols were dispatched just after 1:00 p.m. Saturday for an accident involving a motorcycle and a motor vehicle at the intersection of 9G and 23B in the Town of Greenport.
Deputy Sheriff’s say Shawn Griffin, 46, of Greenport, was traveling westbound on State Route 23 on a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Police say at the same time, Michael Jornov, 57, of Hunter was traveling eastbound on State Route 23 in a 1995 Chevrolet van, when he turned left onto State Route 9G, and into Griffin’s path.
That’s when police say the van struck the motorcycle and Griffin was ejected.
Police say Griffin was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Jornov was not injured in the accident, but was issued a ticket for failing to yield right of way.
The accident is still under investigation by Sheriff’s Investigators, the Sheriff’s Accident/Incident Investigation Unit, and the Office of the District Attorney.
