Shen, Fort Plain both win Section II baseball State Titles

BINGHAMTON, NY (NEWS10) – Coming into the seventh inning, Shenendehowa trailed by two runs. However, that did not stop the Plainsmen from coming from behind in historical fashion. Shen, thanks to Joe Palko, scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to capture the program’s first state championship over Webster-Schroeder 7-6.

Shenendehowa won 3-0 in the semifinals earlier in the day with an outstanding performance by senior pitcher Ian Anderson, who was drafted third overall by the Atlanta Braves in the 2016 MLB Draft on Thursday.

And to put the cherry on top, before the state championship game, Ian’s twin brother, Ben was selected in the 26th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Then in Class D, Fort Plain put its offense on full display, scoring 11 runs en route to an 11-6 victory over West Canada Valley. It’s the Hilltoppers second state championship in program history.

Afterwards, head coach Craig Phillips announced his retirement from coaching.
