ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – New York lawmakers have voted to continue for four more years the prohibition against state licensing of slaughterhouses within 1,500 feet of a residence.

The restriction was scheduled to expire this year.

Sponsors say that before the restrictions were imposed in 2008, New York City failed to adequately control the poor air quality and health threats from live poultry markets in residential and retail areas.

That prompted regular complaints about odors.

Sponsors say smells became “virtually intolerable” in hot summers, while improperly disposed-of animal entrails caused health hazards. They say floating feathers fouled streets and clogged sewer drains and air conditioning ducts.
