PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) – A judge released a Pittsfield Fire Captain accused of assaulting a woman and being in possession of a loaded and unsecured handgun Tuesday night without bail Friday afternoon.

Jeffrey Rawson, 56, conditions include no contact with the victim and no firearms.

After being released, Rawson ran away from the courthouse.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, improper storage of a firearm, and being an intoxicated licensee carrying a firearm.

On Tuesday, police were called to the Onota Boat Ramp for a reported fight between a man and a woman.

The alleged victim and one of the responding officers described what happened in court on Friday.

Police say they found an unsecured black Smith and Wesson Bodyguard 380 sub-compact pistol on the floor behind the passenger seat. Police say the magazine was loaded, but there wasn’t a round in the chamber.

An empty bottle of Fireball Whisky was also found behind the front passenger seat of the car.

The woman had a swollen forehead and blood on her face from a pair of cuts, according to court documents.

She was taken to Berkshire Medical Center for treatment.

Medical personnel at the hospital told her that she had a severe concussion and trouble remembering.

Prosecutors showed text messages and played two short 911 calls as evidence. The judge already had the photos in court records.

Rawson could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He is due back in court on July 19.

Rawson was also employed with the Naval Resources Intelligence Officers.
