COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Albany County Department of Transportation officials were in Colonie on Friday to conduct car seat checks.
The event was held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sears on Central Avenue. It’s designed to keep children safe when they’re in the car.
However, officials said that in nearly 20 years, they’ve been holding car seat checks, a vast majority of car seats aren’t installed correctly.
“We’ve checked about 2,000 seats over the 19 years of this event, and only about 87 have been correct out of the whole bunch,” Traffic Safety Instructor Bill Van Alstyne said.
Van Alstyne said car seats are too loose, the straps are too loose, and parents are facing their children forward before they are 2 years old. He said it’s also important for parents to check the height and weight limits on car seats.
