Off-duty officer saves life of woman overdosing on heroin

REXFORD, NY (NEWS10) – The heroic actions of an off-duty Schenectady police officer saved the life of a woman suffering from an apparent heroin overdose at a Stewart’s shop Tuesday morning.

Ptl. Patrick Irwin, a three-year veteran of the Schenectady Police Department, was shopping inside the Stewart’s shop in Rexford Tuesday morning, when a customer called out for help.

Police say Irwin rushed to help the woman, performing chest compressions until the woman’s pulse was restored and paramedics arrived on the scene.

Thanks to Irwin’s actions, the woman is expected to survive.

Irwin is avoiding the spotlight after the incident, but says he just did what he was trained to do.

“I was at the right place at the right time,” he said. “My training kicked in and I am glad I was able to assist her. Hopefully this experience will propel this young lady to get the treatment that she needs so she can end her battle with addiction.”
