AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Investigators just wrapped up their investigation into an apparent shooting on Garden Street in Amsterdam Tuesday night.
Police say the autopsy was just completed and now have a better understanding of what happened here. Investigators are trying to determine whether the man’s injuries were self-inflicted or if they are dealing with a homicide.
A man who lives next door says he and his wife and children were sitting in the living room when it all happened at around 5:30 p.m.
He didn’t want to go on camera, but told NEWS10 ABC’s Sam DiMascio what he did next.
“I heard three or four shots. I told them to stay inside, I’ll check. I ran out on my porch, looked up and down, and didn’t see anything, so I went in the back and didn’t see anything.”
Minutes later police swarmed the first floor apartment. Police say they found a man lying dead inside the foyer. A gun was found next to his body.
While his neighbors were shaken up, Detective Sergeant Tom Hennessey says at this point in their investigation, they don’t believe the public has any reason to be concerned for their safety.
A New York State forensic team was on scene late into the night collecting evidence and working to piece together what happened.
Police say when they arrived they found a windshield of truck smashed, leading them to believe there was some sort of altercation. Police say they’re still looking into whether the damage is in fact related to the incident.
