Neighbors want home where murder-suicide took place torn down

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A Colonie home, which was the backdrop to a murder-suicide, remains a grim reminder of the tragedy that took place there and neighbors say they want it torn down.

Every time the residents on Scharlen Drive look out their window, they see a horrible reminder of the night Colonie Police Officer Israel Roman killed his wife and young son and then torched their home before taking his own life.

The only survivor was Roman’s eldest son, who he made sure was at a basketball game and not at home.

The “why” of the tragedy remains a mystery to neighbors like Harvey Friedman, who let the Roman boys swim in his pool.

“It’s shocking,” he said. “I didn’t have a close personal relationship, but I like the way they carried themselves.”

Three months later, the burned out shell of a home remains, and the neighbors are starting to complain to the town.

Town Attorney Mike Maggiulli said the town is trying to be sensitive to surviving family members.

“We advised the insurance company that the town would do anything possible,” he said.

“It takes you back to that,” Friedman said. “There it is. That was the outcome.”

The couple did not make out a will, so figuring out the estate will likely take some time.
