WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) – A section of the National Mall in Washington D.C. was shutdown for a portion of Tuesday afternoon after a pickup truck was driven onto the lawn and parked in the middle of the grass.
The driver, who was detained shortly after the incident, reportedly issued a HAZMAT threat, which prompted a large police response.
The vehicle was parked in a section of the mall between the Capitol reflecting pool and the Washington monument.
Two police robots were brought to the scene to search the truck.
The National Mall is a two-mile long federal park between the US Capitol and the Washington Monument.
