WATERFORD, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Police say they’ve arrested a man for allegedly driving over four times the legal limit after finding multiple bottles of vodka in his car and hidden behind a garage in the town of Waterford.
According to officials on Wednesday, May 11 just after 4 p.m. authorities received a call to Division Street in the Village of Waterford for a property damage car accident.
When police got there they saw that a vehicle had rear-ended another vehicle on Middletown Road. The driver that caused the crash also fled the scene, but then came back.
While attempting to interview the defendant, 34-year-old Orion Hamchuk of Troy, he ignored instructions given to him and attempted to get back in his vehicle to leave. Police say after a brief struggle he was eventually taken into custody. Officers were told that Hamchuk had hidden a bottle of liquor near a garage prior to their arrival. A bottle of Skol vodka was located near a garage along with two more Skol vodka bottles in his vehicle.
Police say Hamchuk was found to have a B.A.C. of .33 percent. The defendant was charged with Aggravated DWI – Blood Alcohol Content .18 or higher, a Felony, Driving While Intoxicated, Consumption of Alcohol in a motor vehicle, Leaving the scene of a property damage accident, Driving while Intoxicated, a Felony with a prior conviction within preceding 10 years
He was released on bail.
