ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – New York’s canal system is open earlier than expected this year.
Officials say they’ll be opening Wednesday morning four days ahead of schedule.
Wednesday’s opening date marks the earliest start to the navigation season since 1982 thanks to a mild winter which allowed staff to complete maintenance projects, and opening preparations, ahead of schedule.
The 524-mile system connects the Hudson River with several lakes and rivers throughout the state.
They’ll be open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. up through September before switching back to 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. September 8.
