ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Richard Sauers, who is better known as “Doc”, is celebrating the 60 year anniversary since he began coaching men’s basketball at UAlbany.
Saturday evening, the university recognized Doc by holding a dinner in his honor at the SEFCU Arena. Sauers spent 41 years leading the men’s program before retiring in 1997 as the program’s all-time wins leader with 702 victories.
At the time, Doc stepped away as one of 11 college coaches to reach the 700-win mark.
Doc spoke with News10ABC about the honor he received Saturday night.
“At this point in my life, it’s a great honor and I’m really pleased to be,” said Doc Sauers.
Doc is currently a Special Assistant to Athletic Director Mark Benson.
