ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – The best sports news of the day on Saturday came from an event that didn’t take place on a court or field.
5-year-old Abby Ayles of Halfmoon, who’s battling Leukemia, was adopted by the UAlbany women’s soccer team.
Abby, who was very excited, was welcomed to the family during the team’s year-end banquet through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.
Abby was not adopted in a traditional sense but the squad will provide a support system for her. If you recognize Abby, it’s because she’s the same beautiful little girl who married her favorite nurse at Albany Med last year.
“It’s just going to be one of those unbelievable things that these college athletes are going to get to experience way before they get to the real world. And they’re really going to make a difference for her and I think she’s going to make a tremendous impact on us,” said UAlbany women’s soccer coach Caitlin Cucchiella.
Coach Cucchiella said whatever Abby needs, whether it be a text or call or even a fun day away from treatment like a rollercoaster ride, the Danes will help her out.
