Retired Army colonel from NY, veteran of 3 wars, dies at 90

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. (AP) — An Army veteran of three wars who became a staunch supporter of veterans’ organizations and New York state’s military heritage has died.

Gleason Funeral Home in Schenectady says John Edwards died Monday at his home in neighboring Niskayuna. He was 90. A cause of death wasn’t given.

The Oakham, Massachusetts, native served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was shot down on his 24th mission over Germany and was a prisoner of war before being liberated in May 1945.

Edwards also served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the Army as a colonel in 1972.

Edwards was involved with several veterans’ organizations and founded a volunteer group that supports the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs.

Funeral services are Saturday in Schenectady. He’ll be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
