23-year-old dies after crashing stolen car into bank in Guilderland

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A crash happened overnight in Guilderland, right near Stuyvesant Plaza.

Around 12:40 a.m., Guilderland Police say they responded to a report of a car crash, in the area of Schoolhouse Rd and Western Ave. The driver of the car, was 23-year-old Cory Ash, who was driving east on Western Ave, and struck a guardrail on Schoolhouse Rd, causing the car to enter the parking lot of Citizens Bank. Debris from the car caused damage to the bank and the car itself sustained extensive damage during the crash.

Police say Cory Ash, was observed on radar to be operating at 95 mph by a Guilderland Police Officer on Western Ave in the area of Crossgates Mall. The officer says he did not pursue the vehicle, but did attempt to locate the vehicle, checking Western Ave into the City of Albany. The Albany Police Department and SUNY Albany Police Department were notified about the speeding vehicle. Police say Ash did crash shortly after this notification. At no time was there any type of police pursuit.

McKownville Fire Department also responded to the crash and the driver had to be extricated out the vehicle. Ash received emergency medical attention and was transported to Albany Medical Center, but was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to police, the car Ash was driving was reported stolen from Albany, minutes prior to the crash. He was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

Schoolhouse Road and Western Ave have re-opened.
