Mayor Bill De Blasio takes heat for skit being called offensive, racist

NEW YORK, N.Y. (NEWS10) – New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio is taking heat for a scripted skit with democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Some claim one part of it, was racist and offensive.

Clinton was part of a sketch with De Blasio at New York’s inner circle dinner on Saturday. It was a gathering that brings together New York journalists, political operatives and elected officials.

Here is a verbatim of the script:

“I just have to say, thanks for the endorsement, Bill. Took you long enough,” Hillary said.

“Sorry, Hillary, I was running on CP time,” said De Blasio.

The joke in question was a play on ‘CP time,’ also known as “colored people’s time,” a stereotype about African-Americans running late, but the mayor says that was not his objective.

“It was clearly a staged show, it was a scripted show. And the whole idea was to do the counter-intuitive and say ‘cautious politician time,’ said Mayor Bill De Blasio, New York City.

De Blasio said critics were “missing the point.” He said the point of his joke was to turn a negative stereotype on its head.
