WASHINGTON (NEWS10) – Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand sat down on Wednesday with the man who could soon be the newest Supreme Court judge.
The New York democrat sat down with Merrick Garland Wednesday morning.
Garland’s nomination has come under a lot of scrutiny after Justice Antonin Scalia’s death. Some republican lawmakers suggested that finding a replacement should be put on hold until a new president takes office.
But President Barack Obama and many others said it’s his duty to fill the vacancy.
Sen. Gillibrand thinks Garland could be exactly what the court needs.
“I think he’s a highly qualified nominee,” she said. “His jurisprudence experience is extraordinary and positions him to be an excellent and outstanding justice.”
Before the meeting, Garland had already met with seven democratic senators, including New York’s own Chuck Schumer.
