NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — A landmark Niagara Falls hotel where Marilyn Monroe once stayed is being bought by a state agency overseeing development in the economically struggling western New York City.

The Niagara Gazette reports the USA Niagara Development Corp. on Wednesday agreed to purchase the Hotel Niagara from its current owner for $4.4 million. The agency will seek proposals from developers to restore the 92-year-old downtown hotel.

Hotel Niagara has been closed since 2007. Canadian businessman Harry Stinson bought the property in 2011 and announced plans to renovate the 12-story structure and reopen it as a hotel. A deal to sell the 193-room hotel to another developer fell through.

Local officials view the hotel as a key to revitalizing the city.

Monroe stayed at the hotel in 1952 while filming “Niagara.”
