Officer shot armed man after standoff in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – Police say an hours long standoff ended after an officer shot a man armed with two kitchen knives in downtown Burlington.

Police cruisers were parked near the senior housing apartments around 9 p.m. Monday. Deputy Police Chief Jan Wright tells reporters that a man experiencing mental health issues had been holed up inside for more than four hours and officers were trying to bring him out peacefully.

Police Chief Brandon del Pozo says the officer opened fire after attempts to subdue the man. He says the man had brandished two large kitchen knives.

The unidentified man was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Del Pozo says he was facing eviction and multiple calls were made to police in recent weeks.

Authorities are investigating.
