UAlbany women recollect on their historic season

SYRACUSE, NY (NEWS10) – Long after the game was over and all the fans headed home, the UAlbany women’s basketball team came back out on the court to soak up the moment.

They really wanted to remember this season, not for today’s loss to Syracuse, but for making history and everything they accomplished along the way.

“I don’t want them to have their heads down. I don’t want them to be sad.  I want them to feel blessed that the things that we’ve done here are pretty amazing, “said Head Coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson.

“All the great things we’ve done as a team that no one thought we would, like winning a championship five times in a row, making history,” said Senior Shereesha Richards.

Shereesha Richards and fellow senior Erin Coughlin made history, not just in the NCAA Tournament, but also as the winningest class to play for the UAlbany program. They have finished their careers with a record of 107-23.

“You know, it’s never fun knowing it’s your last time on the court.  It was definitely emotional.  I’m just so happy to be here.  No one thought we were gonna make it this far and we did it. When the final buzzer rang, we had no regrets, “said Coughlin.

And Erin wanted her teammates to know that after the game.

“We both just kind of thanked everybody for working so hard and for making our four years here, especially senior year so special.  This is gonna be a year we’re never gonna forget, “said Coughlin.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better team.  I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to my senior year.  Because at some point, everyone’s gonna lose, except maybe for UConn.  But I’m so proud of my team, “said Richards.

The Great Danes were also really proud of the way they fought throughout the entire game against Syracuse. The Danes even pulled within single digits in the fourth quarter, but in the end, Syracuse was just too athletic.
