UAlbany women squeak by Maine 59-58 to win their 5th straight America East Championship

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win. The UAlbany Women’s basketball team defeated Maine 59-58 for their fifth straight America East Conference Championship.

Now the Danes are going dancing for the fifth straight year.

“A lot of emotions going on right now. It hasn’t dawned in yet but it’s just a lot of excitement. I’m not crying yet but later on, when I’m back in my room, like me and Erin are probably going to be celebrating,” said UAlbany Senior Forward Shereesha Richards.

“This was so sweet! It was so sweet! You know, it got close at the end but we pulled it out and it was just a hell of a game, “said Junior Guard Imani Tate.

“It was just so many emotions throughout the entire thing. Just winning my last championship on my home court, last time I play here, it’s an amazing feeling,” said Senior Guard Erin Coughlin.

“To be honest, I have a stomach ache so it feels relief. I feel relief. I’m happy to see them dancing around and having fun because they’ve worked really, really, really hard,” said Head Coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson.

Now UAlbany has to await its fate. Selection Monday is just a couple of days away and that’s when we’ll find out where the Danes go in the NCAA Tournament.
