SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Schenectady Police Department is alerting citizens of a scheme involving an offer of an individual to perform concrete work.
According to police, a city resident was approached by a subject offering to repair damages to her sidewalk. She allowed the subject into her home, and police said the suspect convinced her to give him several hundred dollars as a down payment for repairs he claimed he would make.
The suspect also alleged managed to distract the resident and stole several more hundred dollars from inside her home, police said.
No repair work has been done to the resident’s sidewalk, and police said the suspect has attempted to collect more money from the victim.
The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-30s with a scruffy beard. He may be operating a newer, full size white work van. The make and model of the van is unknown.
Police want to remind residents to be careful when dealing with anyone who solicits at doorsteps and to avoid letting strangers into their homes.
Police said residents should ask for references when dealing with contractors and avoid paying cash whenever possible.
