NEW YORK (NEWS10) – House Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Governor Cuomo’s paid family leave proposal.
The Governor has pushed for access to family leave for NY workers. As of now, the federal law allows workers to take time off with putting their jobs in jeopardy.
However, employers are not required to pay their employees for that time. Governor Cuomo wants to establish a 12 week paid program, which is the most robust in the country.
“No paid leave is too low to pay to lose a day of work or to pay for child care. No choice to put a sick child on the bus. It’s not good for that child, it’s not good for the other children on the bus, it’s not good for the classroom, and it’s not good for the USA,” said Cuomo.
Minority Leader Pelosi said the US is way behind the rest of the world on this issue.
The Governor’s plan would double the length of paid leave compared to any other state.
