Former, longtime Washington Co. sheriff passes away

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A former Washington County sheriff has died.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office announced the passing of Sheriff Martin Wescott. He died at Glens Falls Hospital Thursday morning.

He was 85.

Wescott served as sheriff from 1979 to 1991.

The sheriff’s office posted a picture to its Facebook page on Thursday that shows Wescott with his men on the steps of the old Salem Jail in 1990.

According to the sheriff’s office, members who served under Sheriff Wescott continue to actively serve with the sheriff’s office in various capacities. They are Sgt. Chris Worthington, Deputy Keith McMurray, Deputy Don Jett, Deputy Frank McCullen, Deputy Richard Lachapelle, and Corrections Officer Ben Hayes.
