VALATIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Forty truck drivers are receiving checks after getting a winning Powerball ticket.
According to the New York State Gaming Commission, it all started when driver Kenneth Shumway decided to buy a ticket for the January 9 Powerball drawing and then asked his coworkers if they wanted to contribute.
All 40 drivers contributed $5, and Shumway purchased 100 tickets from the Stewart’s Shop on Route 9 in Valatie. He left photocopies of the ticket in the work common area along with a list of everyone who contributed.
The winning numbers were 16, 19, 32, 34, 57, and Powerball 13.
“I looked for the Powerball number first and only had it in a couple of places,” Shumway told the Gaming Commission. “I started checking the other numbers and there they were on the second ticket I looked at; we had all of the first five numbers.”
Shumway and his wife put the winning ticket in a plastic bag and hid it in a sack of flour until they could transfer it to a safety deposit box.
The 40 winners chose to form an LLC before claiming the prize to easily disburse the money. Each person will share the $661,800 net prize.
