GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Police said an Averill Park woman was arrested on Wednesday for leaving her infant in the car while she went into a shop at Stuyvesant Plaza.
“I was just totally shocked,” Svetlana Mausler said. “I don’t know what to think. Even my dog, I never leave in the car like this.”
Mausler did not want to appear on camera, but she said she was parked next to Drislane’s car. Mausler said she was talking on the phone for about 30 minutes when she saw something move.
“Then I left my car, and I go close to the car, and I see a baby waking up,” she described.
Mausler then called Guilderland police.
“It was 30 degrees out yesterday,” Guilderland Deputy Chief Curtis Cox said. “We know that it was very windy yesterday. There were extreme wind chills. It’s just inexcusable.”
NEWS10 ABC visited Drislane’s home and reached out to her by phone but with no success. Mausler believes Drislane was getting medicine for the child who may have been ill.
“I saw mother was giving medicine to baby, so she left sick baby in cold car,” she said.
Cox said the reason behind Drislane’s actions is of little consequence.
“It doesn’t matter what she was there for,” he said. “It’s inexcusable. She left a child in the car.”
Drislane was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and issued an appearance ticket to appear in Guilderland Town Court at a later date.
The maximum jail sentence for the crime is one year.
