iPhone error turns phones into a ‘brick’

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The smart phones we have are our alarm clocks, GPS and personal organizers. But what if those phones were rendered useless because of something you didn’t even know you did.

That is what happens when an “Error 53” occurs.

“You’ll be left with a brick basically,” said Marco Quint, the manager if iGuru in Topeka.

The error occurs after two things happen. The first is the home button on the phone is replaced by a technician that is not certified by Apple. The phone may operate as normal, until the system is updated to iOS 9 and above.

“No one has the ability to replace that home button,” Quint said. No one but Apple. That is because, according to Apple, it’s trying to protect your fingerprint used to open the phone and the information stored on the phone.

In an article with The Guardian, a spokesperson for Apple said ” When iPhone is serviced by an authorized Apple service provider or Apple retail store for changes that effect the touch ID sensor, the pairing is re-validated.”

The same release also stated the check “ensures the device and the iOS features related to touch ID remain secure.”

So Quint recommends two things; get insurance on the phone and “should your phone have that fingerprint scanner not working, you will not want to update.”

But for people who use their phones everyday, a complete technology lock down would be detrimental to work.

“Having something like that happen…they probably wouldn’t have my business again for a while,” said John Jacobson. Jacobson was at iGuru to have his computer repaired. “I use it for everything. Work especially, you know, that GPS really helps.”
