Four WWII vets honored by American Legion Chaplain

MECHANICVILLE, NY (NEWS10) – On Saturday, four Army soldiers who sacrificed their lives to save others during WWII were all honored.

Back in 1943, the ship they were on was attacked by a German submarine. Over 600 soldiers died in that attack but hundreds survived because of these four brave men.

William Wicks, the Chaplain of the American Legion Post in Mechanicville, said that once he found out about this event, he decided to make it his goal to honor those four men.

“They went down saving over 200 men, and they gave up their own life-preserver so that others could live”, said Wicks.

This was the third year of this memorial.
