Special Olympic athletes go for the gold in snowshoe competition

QUEENSBURY, NY (NEWS10) – Early Saturday morning, 90 athletes from seven different regions met on the mountain and they all had one thing in mind and that was to win the gold medal.

“My dad is always telling me to go out and reach for the stars”, said competitor Bridget Hotaling.

For many of these athletes, it was their first time competing.

“I was saying no I don’t want to try it. I don’t know. I was guessing myself. I want to do it or not to do it? And I tried out, I’m practicing and its fun”, said competitor Ronald Cahoo.

While they slapped on their snowshoes and raced to the finish line as fast as they could, these athletes put their all into this big day.

“I practiced on the beach in Huntington”, said competitor Donni Moore.

“It’s just a great opportunity to see the fruits of our labor. We started months ahead of time trying to get everything in place”, said Program Director Ryan Miller.

Not only does a competition like this help them strive to do their best, but it also helps them train both mentally and physically.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to get outside and participate in a phenomenal competition”, said Miller.
