ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A classically trained violinist is teaming up with the Empire State Youth Orchestra to perform some modern music at Proctors.
NEWS10ABC’s Heather Kovar got a chance to strum with him at the Massry Center for the Arts at St. Rose, where he will give a free talk Thursday night.
This Saturday night at Proctors you can hear World Class Juilliard trained violinist Charles Yang . He is going to play with the Empire State Youth Orchestra, some crossover music – including things like “Hotel California.”
The concert is meant to offer a blend of the traditional with modern to appeal to a broad audience.
“We thought why not take the orchestra and turn it into a rock band,” said Charles Yang.
Along with Eagles Hotel California, they’ll also play Queens Bohemian Rhapsody and the Beatles Blackbird.
“I always like to say yes before I say no. In terms of exploring… if you don’t know something, go explore it!” Yang said.
“For me it’s to see these children work through music kind of like I did and they’re seeing things in a new light, whereas if seen a lot of things and sometimes I forget there is much more to learn there a lot more, I’ll be a student in music for the rest of my life,” Yang explained.
They are starting out their careers and it’s really exciting. While in the Capital Region, the Austin, Texas native will also hold workshops and concerts at some local schools.
