Gansevoort doctor sentenced to prison for selling oxycodone prescriptions for cash

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Gansevoort orthopedic surgeon who illegally prescribed tens of thousands of oxycodone pills will spend six and a half years in prison.

Jeffrey Gundel, 51, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to one count of Unlawful Distribution of Oxycodone in December 2014.

Gundel admitted that, between May 2011 and April 2014, he wrote over 200 prescriptions which allowed 59,520 pills to be dispensed for no legitimate medical purpose.

He also admitted said he received cash kickbacks from people who would fill the prescriptions and then illegally sell the drug. On several occasions, Gundel prescribed oxycodone to undercover law enforcement agents he never met, treated, or communicated with in any way, according to U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian.

During sentencing, Judge Mae D’Agostino told Gundel he “became a common criminal drug dealer.”

Gundel was also sentenced to three years of supervised release after he leaves prison.
