7-year-old girl inspired to collect socks for homeless

NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WCMH) – A seven-year-old New Albany girl is doing her part to help the homeless.

Camie Barber decided to start a sock drive at watching a news story about the homeless on NBC4.

“I saw it on your news and I really like to care about people sometimes. So I just wanted to help them out,” Camie told us.

On Wednesday, January 13, NBC4 reported how homeless families and individuals needed extra help during the cold winter months.

Camie loves to watch the news, especially after Sunday Night Football.

The day after the story aired, Camie began her sock drive at the Goddard School in New Albany.

“They might not have boots on. They may have tennis shoes and they might need a lot of socks to cover legs, ankles and keep their toes warm,” said Camie.

Homeless advocates say new socks are always in short supply and the most requested item by their clients.

Word spread quickly through social media, and people filled three bins with socks.

“I’ve got grown up socks. I got big kids’ socks. And I’ve got little kids’ socks,” said Camie. “And I got baby socks. I was impressed I got baby socks because I thought no one will get me baby socks.”

Camie will continue to collect socks through the end of this week and then deliver her haul to Faith Mission next week. She hopes her story inspires other kids to give back and she’s willing to lend her expertise.

“I’d say ‘I did a sock drive before and I can help you out with it,’” said Camie. “Just to make them not too nervous about it.”
