WRIGHT, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Officials say a driver of a car who crashed into a pond into Schoharie County has died.
Police say at 4:43 p.m. on January 13 dispatchers received a call that a 4 wheel Payloader vehicle was upside down in a private pond located on Rickard Hill Road between Pickett Hill Road and Abrams Road in the Town of Wright. The caller stated the driver was still in the vehicle.
Schoharie County Sheriff’s Deputies, the Gallupville, Berne and East Berne Fire Departments along with the Central Bridge Rescue Squad responded to the scene.
They say the scene was on a steep slope and was extremely icy. A cold water rescue team from Berne FD was deployed to the scene as a safety precaution for recovery personnel working on the scene.
Crews said in order to get the vehicle out of the water, a commercial towing service would be needed, so they called one over.
At 7:25 p.m. the vehicle was removed from the water and the operator was located in the cab of the vehicle, dead.
The victim was transported to Albany Medical Center for an autopsy. He is being identified as 54-year-old Gary Schultz of Gallupville, NY. The coroner ruled the death accidental.
The investigation is continuing.
