SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – State Police say a Schenectady man abandoned his vehicle in the driving lane of I-890 Tuesday night, causing a police car to crash into it.
Officials say the vehicle was a black Chevrolet Impala which was left in the dark, with no lighting activated and the driver’s door open. A State Police patrol car struck the abandoned vehicle causing significant damage to both vehicles. The incident occurred in the area of the Broadway exit in the west bound driving lane.
When police began their investigation, it was revealed that 31-year-old Jeffrey Chase Jr. who currently lives in Schenectady, ran out of gas on the interstate highway. He says he abandoned the vehicle while it was still in the driving lane and left the area with the keys. However, police say he made no attempt to notify authorities or make arrangements to remove the hazard. The lights and hazard flashers of the vehicle were determined to be working but were not turned on.
Chase was charged with Reckless Endangerment 1st (Felony), Reckless Endangerment of Property (Misdemeanor) Criminal Impersonation 2nd (Misdemeanor) and various vehicle and traffic tickets.
