WASHINGTON (NEWS10) – President Barack Obama signed into law a federal mandate that bans microbeads from products sold across the United States.
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was the lead author on the law. The law states microbeads have the potential to cause serious ecological damage and have already polluted bodies of water in New York State.
Microbeads are found in some personal care products such as facial scrubs and hand cleansers; however, they are washed down the drain and are too small to be captured in wastewater treatment plants.
Sen. Gillibrand said the following in a statement:
“By removing products containing plastic microbeads from the marketplace, we can now begin to focus on cleaning up the mess they caused.”
