GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Get to Glens Falls and take home a state championship: That’s been the goal for high school boys basketball teams around New York for 35 years. But the state tournament will say goodbye to the Glens Falls Civic Center after this season.
All dreams of a state title will now go through Binghamton, at least between 2017 and 2019. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Executive Committee approved the move on Friday, with 14 of the 22 members voting in favor of the Floyd l Maines Veterans’ Memorial Arena.
The 40-year old venue has undergone $2.5 million in renovations over the past two years. It seats about 2,000 more people than the Glens Falls Civic Center, which drew nearly 18,000 people to the state championships last year.
The local arena will hold the three-day event for one more year between March 11 and 13.
