TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Rensselaer County Legislature adopted the 2016 budget by a 13-5 vote.
The 2016 budget was the fifth consecutive budget to stay below the tax cap, according to Chair of the Legislature Stan Brownell.
According to the legislature, the budget protects county services, including services for seniors, veterans and youth with a modest fund balance.
The budget was reviewed at two public hearings and was presented by County Executive Kathleen Jimino in October. The budget includes a 1.88 percent tax increase, which is still below the state tax cap.
Minimal changes were made by legislators to the budget, including the addition of funds for road repair and improvement.
In addition, the legislature kept costs in legislative departments comparable to what they were 20 years ago. A recent rebid of the county insurance policy also kept the county insurance costs lower than what was paid by the county 20 years ago, according to the legislature.
