Trailways bus driver retires after 51 years behind the wheel

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A local bus driver is saying Happy Trails to Trailways Bus Company.

For 51 years and three million miles, Chuck Pona was in the driver’s seat of a Trailways bus. On Monday, he parked it for the very last time at the Albany Bus Terminal. Pona was greeted by cheers, balloons and cake.

The average driver adds 10,000 miles a year to their odometer, so Pona has compiled the equivalent of 300 years behind the wheel.

“I try to keep a happy atmosphere, and that’s the way it was for all these years,” he said. “I’ve always been happy with the people.”

Pona planned to retire before Thanksgiving, but Trailways needed him, so he agreed to work the extra week.

His next stop is South Carolina to visit family.
